Ireland, known popularly as the Emerald Isle, is an island in north-western Europe which has been divided politically since 1920. The Republic of Ireland (Irish: Éire or Poblacht na hÉireann) is a nation state in the British Isles. It constitutes the main portion of the island and is bounded to the northeast by Northern Ireland (Irish: Tuaisceart na hÉireann) which is part of the United Kingdom.
